Self-Care: Why Journaling is Good for the Soul

"Fill Your Paper with the heart breathings of your heart"-William Wordsworth

Hey guys!! How is everyone doing!? It's been years since my last post but today I felt inspired to write so here it goes.

I wanted to share with you guys a self-care tip that I use that can help you release the stresses of life.  As many of you see I  have been making sure I am tackling my health and wellness goals one day at a time.  You guys have been seeing me working hard to keep a healthy lifestyle (it's a struggle..lol).  If you haven't had a chance go ahead and check out my post Journey to 10: How to get back Fit tips on how to journey back to healthy living.  In my quest to get my physical right, I can not forget about keeping my mental right!  Having my mind intact is beneficial for me to be a great mom, friend, and overall person.  For a few years, I was going to therapy which had helped me tremendously, but another thing that has helped me is writing in a journal.

Writing in a journal has helped me in a lot of ways, such as keeping my mind in a positive state, freedom of expression, and self-reflection.  We all know that life can be a bitch and it can throw so many unexpected things our way.  Trust me I know but instead of diving into certain vices like shopping, drinking, or sex.  I am here to give you guys something different to consider when you are feeling like your back is against the wall.

I shared with you guys my 20 fun facts about me how I love to collect journals.  It's a real thing!  I developed my love for journal writing when I was super young and from my mom (I still own her journals to this day). When my mom died many things in my life had changed.  I was 10 years old in a new city, missing my family and friends, and living with my daddy.  I was extremely shy and I didn't talk to anyone.  I dealt with a lot of different emotions that I didn't know how to express.  Looking for a way to release I picked up a notebook and started writing.   Since then that has been my outlet.  Writing in a journal has helped me decompress when I feel things are too much. When I release my thoughts on those pages I feel so much better.

Why is Journal-ing Important!?

There is a sense of freedom I receive when I write.  The pages of my journal are filled with my dreams, fears, and goals.  I am free to write anything without any judgment.  I am one of those people who can be VERY transparent about my life.   I can choose to write about deeply personal things in my journal that I don't want to share with anyone.   I feel you are eliminating the unnecessary drama, people's unwanted opinions, and everything else.

Self-reflection is another important piece that comes with writing in a journal.  I keep all of my journals.  I oftentimes laugh and get embarrassed over some of the things I wrote.  Reflecting allows me to see how much I have grown as a person.  It also allows me to be thankful for how I managed to come out of those things that I didn't think I would get out of.  Katie Dalebout, said it best that "Journaling is a great way to know yourself by getting in touch with intuition."

How Often Should You Journal?

You can journal anytime whenever the spirit moves you!  There isn't a specific time or day.  I like to write in the morning or when I have a little bit of alone time.  I don't confine myself to anything specific because I like writing when it moves me.  But anytime is a good time to write.

What Type of Journal Style Can You Use?

There are many journals and writing styles you can choose from such as writing, bullet, video, art, and the list goes on and on.  My go-to is mainly free writing but for the past couple of months, I have been using the "It's a Manifestation + Gratitude Journal" by Lady Adelaide, and "Soul Therapy" by Jacqueline Kademian.

Each journal serves a different purpose but I use them interchangeably.   Lady Adelaide's journal helps me express my gratitude every day and manifest the life I want to live.  Meanwhile, Soul Therapy gives daily journal prompts to help get me writing.

I hope these tips can provide some benefit to you as you navigate your self-care journey.  Let me know in the comments if you have any tips on how to manage your self-care.

Until next time,

Brandy Michelle
